Eric's brilliant brain

A couple of weeks ago I posted the Major Lazer “Keep it going louder” video on the blog. Now Eric Wareheim, one of the two brilliant brains behind “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” has redone it and it kicks ass. Don’t miss the “Hacky Sack Extreme” clip in the beginning of the episode below.

How to summarize the social media landscape in three bullets

Friend and former colleague, Aaron Uhrmacher, has been AFK for a while, not posting on his blog. Yesterday he was back explaining the cause for his absence, and writing about how he hadn't missed social media and that nothing had changed.

  • The same marketers posting too frequent Twitter updates continued to pollute the stream.
  • The conversations about social media ROI, the iPhone vs. the Droid and the exaggerated death of news media continued unabated and with little in the way of new information.
  • Google Wave came and went, and now everyone is back to talking about Twitter.

Aaron pokes the social media landscape right where it hurts. Social media discussions are often way too introspective and lacking a critical perspective. Let's get off of the compulsive retweeting behaviour and let's stop gathering around the same topics.

Something made me think about Bluto's speach in Animal House, when he runs out of the room (maybe it's just me who's seen the movie too many times).

Office on Wheels

From Amazon product description: "Easily convert your car into your personal automobile office with the Wheel Mate car desk by MobileOffice."

You can probably also use it as a table for drive thru meals, or a mini bar to easily mix your drinks while you're on the road...

Zombies outside the box

This is a pretty old technique but I love surprises. On my daily tour at gametrailers.com I stumbled upon this trailer for Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles for the Nintendo Wii.  At first it appears to be just an ordinary trailer but halfway into the movie the zombies start to pop out of the player – trashing the site to pieces.

City of Stockholm <3 Creative Commons - you should too

CropperCapture[3].jpg

Said it before, saying it again - Creative Commons is a founding part of the internet. Everybody should learn about it, use it, spread it, love it. There.

However, this is not the case. Everybody doesn't use Creative Commons. And everybody certainly doesn't understand it. I have recent examples of enormous blogs disrespecting the CC license by re-publishing CC content created by clients, without an attribution.

I realize the lack of attribution is due to the blog's fear of losing readers when linking out to the original source. However, this act hurts the CC license and the internet culture of sharing. And to be honest, it ticks me off.

What does make me happy is when a large organisation like the City of Stockholm starts using CC. Yesterday, the City Commissioner of sports and culture announced on her blog that the city is opening up there digital photo archive for everyone to use under CC.

The hidden collections of Stockholm should become more accessible for the residents. This is why the cultural board has decided to use the Creative Commons license system for the pictures in Stadsarkivet (The City Archive) and Stadsmuseet (The City Museum). This is the start of a policy process for the use of digital images from the collections of the City of Stockholm.

Let's salute this, and celebrate by spreading the word of Creative Commons.

Never underestimate the power of animals trying to be human

I'm having a hard time believing this video is not fake. If it's true, it's amazing but sad.

Former Microsoft CTO cooks his food in a laboratory

Nathan Myhrvold, former CTO of Microsoft, is publishing a cook book with scientific recipes. With a staff of five, he plays around in his laboratory kitchen with his lab equipment. 'It's basically like a software project,' Dr. Myhrvold said. 'It's very much like a review we would do at Microsoft.'

Here is a PDF describing how to cook Dr. Myhrvold's cryoseared and cryorendered duck breast.

Hyper Island students discover Facebook flaw - reach world fame

Control your info

Picture: Mashable

A group of students from Swedish new media school, Hyper Island, discovered a flaw in the Facebook group administration set up, and took over several groups and renamed them Control your info.

If a group admin steps down any member can take over which allows them to do lots of potentially bad stuff to the group. And these admin-less groups can be found by a simple search.

In their own words:

When you’re admin of a group, you can basically do anything you want with it. You can change it’s name, and the groups members won’t even get a notification of it. You can send mails to all members and edit info. [...] This isn’t some kind of scare tactics, nor is it a hack, it’s a feature that can be used, and is being used, in bad ways. Remember, control your info! Also, this project is strictly not for profit and done for a good cause.

It is obvious the students found an important flaw that Facebook needs to deal with, and the action has spread around the world to all major news and social media outlets. However, it would have been interesting to see what the discussions would have concerned would they have publicly stated that they are students of new media.

This project displays curiosity and brilliance, and it is also slightly offensive, which in all makes for a great discussion topic.

FX evolution

You just have to love Ray Harryhausen’s creature design from the 60’s with ”Jason and the Argonauts” as the crown jewel. A couple of days ago Warner Brothers released the teaser trailer for the remake of Harryhausen’s ”Clash of the Titans” from 1981. It’s pretty mush the same basic idea, sure the older movies got their charm, but it’s hard not to be reminded of the giant leap the special effects have taken during the years.

Presentation on the Satio Launch Blog from IPRA 09

Below is the presentation I held at IPRA 09 last Friday in London. I speak about how personality is the key to a corporate blog, and how this created enormous engagement in the Satio Launch Blog project that we conducted with Sony Ericsson in September-October (today the Satio Blog is redesigned into the Sony Ericsson Product Blog).

I also talk briefly on Jung's view of communication as camp fires and personal relations.

Feedback please!
