City of Stockholm <3 Creative Commons - you should too
Said it before, saying it again - Creative Commons is a founding part of the internet. Everybody should learn about it, use it, spread it, love it. There.
However, this is not the case. Everybody doesn't use Creative Commons. And everybody certainly doesn't understand it. I have recent examples of enormous blogs disrespecting the CC license by re-publishing CC content created by clients, without an attribution.
I realize the lack of attribution is due to the blog's fear of losing readers when linking out to the original source. However, this act hurts the CC license and the internet culture of sharing. And to be honest, it ticks me off.
What does make me happy is when a large organisation like the City of Stockholm starts using CC. Yesterday, the City Commissioner of sports and culture announced on her blog that the city is opening up there digital photo archive for everyone to use under CC.
The hidden collections of Stockholm should become more accessible for the residents. This is why the cultural board has decided to use the Creative Commons license system for the pictures in Stadsarkivet (The City Archive) and Stadsmuseet (The City Museum). This is the start of a policy process for the use of digital images from the collections of the City of Stockholm.
Let's salute this, and celebrate by spreading the word of Creative Commons.
Is Obama Clumsy or Personal When Calling Kanye a Jackass?
So Kanye and Obama has been all over the news the last week. As usual, it feels like, no?
Anywho, after Kanye did his show on the VMA's last week, Obama – seemingly not knowing that the cameras were on – called Kanye a jackass. You know that if it would have been George Bush Jr using those words, it would have seemed like he's out of touch with the crowds.
But this time it is The Obama, who's street smart, knows the Book of Faces, crowd sourcing and Creative Commons. Does Obama get away with calling Kanye a jackass since he's a personal guy – a man of New Media?
"Cut the president some slack"?

Creative Commons is the Foundation of the Future Internet

Photo: Andrew Niddrie
I'm a huge fan of the licensing model Creative Commons. My fanhood is based on the belief that CC has a founding role in how the future internet is shaped. Sharing is a founding part of the internet, as well as remixing and republishing. And this is what CC encourages.
Sharing and believing that working together means better possibilities to create something lasting is a philosophy that is key in several parts of the society (e.g. open source and wikinomics). There are still very few (please correct me if I'm wrong - I'd be delighted) services that utilize the CC model, which is sad.
Flickr is the service that has boosted the use of CC the most, with millions of pictures being available to use under the different CC licenses. ReadWriteWeb posted a question a few weeks ago – should Flickr do more to promote Creative Commons?
If Flickr could promote CC more, I'd say go ahead, but I'd rather see YouTube do more since they're in a position to make a difference.
YouTube stated earlier this year that they would start using CC, but there is still no way to search for videos licensed under CC, which makes it sort of useless. Creative Commons is the future of the internet, but to get there it needs a lot of teaching to get publicly acceptance.
